STRATEGIC MEETING BETWEEN OSAPA LONDON YOUTH ORGANIZATION (OLYO) AND SUPERSAVER SUPERMARKET ON SDG-DRIVEN ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT

In a significant stride towards fostering environmental sustainability and community development, the leadership of the Osapa London Youth Organization (OLYO) on 15th March 2025 convened a formal meeting with the management team of Supersaver Supermarket, located in Osapa London. This high-level engagement aimed to solidify a collaborative sponsorship that aligns with the organization’s ongoing efforts towards advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the area of environmental protection and public health.

At the core of the discussion was OLYO’s flagship program, the “100 Participants Monthly Environmental Sanitation” initiative. This ambitious project seeks to mobilize and engage at least one hundred members of the Osapa London community every month in large-scale sanitation exercises. The program is designed to promote a cleaner, healthier environment while instilling a culture of civic responsibility among the youths and residents.

A key highlight of the meeting was the in-depth conversation on waste management, focusing specifically on the recycling of tin cans, and plastic bottles. The representatives from OLYO presented an innovative solution—the deployment of a state-of-the-art Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) manufactured by Ecobarter. The machine offers a practical and sustainable approach to recycling by incentivizing residents to return used cans and plastic bottles, which could also serve as a commodity for funds generation rather than waste product, thereby reducing litter and contributing to a circular economy within the community. The environmental and socio-economic benefits of this recycling model were carefully articulated, including the reduction of plastic pollution, generation of recyclable materials, and promotion of eco-friendly habits.

In addition, the dialogue explored the pressing issue of open defecation, which continues to pose severe public health risks to residents in some part of the community. The OLYO delegation introduced the concept of a modernized mobile toilet system, designed to provide safe, hygienic, and accessible sanitation facilities in areas lacking adequate public infrastructure. The mobile toilets aim to curtail the prevalence of open defecation, improve community health outcomes, and align with global standards for sanitation under the SDG framework.

Further discussions delved into the operational framework of OLYO, shedding light on its mission, values, and the dedicated team driving its vision.

The management of Supersaver Supermarket Supersaver management shared their past community contribution, such as installing lights on Yahaya Dosunmu Way, noting they would have preferred collaborating with OLYO had it been active earlier.

The meeting was highly productive and far-reaching in scope, as both parties expressed mutual interest in forging a partnership that will benefit the broader Osapa London community. The President of OLYO, in his closing remarks, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the management of Supersaver Supermarket for their warm reception, encouragement, and willingness to engage in meaningful corporate social responsibility initiatives.

The session concluded on a positive note, with both parties agreeing to further dialogues to actualize the outlined plans and to collectively contribute to the environmental and public health advancement of Osapa London.
